02/18/2009 - Salt Lake City, UT (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - C.J. Miles scored a game-best 24 points, Deron Williams added 20 and Utah welcomed Andrei Kirilenko back to the lineup in a 117-99 rout of Memphis.

Kirilenko, who missed 11 games after undergoing ankle surgery, played 17 1/2 high-energy minutes with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Ronnie Brewer chipped in with 19 points and Williams added 15 assists to his point total. Paul Millsap tallied 18 points, 18 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Utah won its ninth consecutive game against Memphis and improved to an impressive 22-6 at home this season. It will conclude a five-game homestand against Boston, New Orleans and Atlanta.

Rudy Gay and O.J. Mayo each totaled 18 points, Darko Milicic notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Mike Conley donated 13 points for the Grizzlies, who dropped to 3-20 away from home on the campaign.

The two teams shifted control back and forth during the first half, as Utah opened a 31-23 lead after 12 minutes only to see it whittle way to a 56-56 deadlock at the half.

However, whatever momentum the Grizzlies built up in the second quarter was erased quickly in the second half.

A slim 77-76 Utah edge quickly turned into 86-76 after nine straight points. Williams tallied the first four points and Millsap's conventional three-point play capped the stretch. Utah took an 88-80 advantage into the final period.

Conley's three-point play early in the quarter trimmed the deficit to 90-86, but Utah again went on a massive spurt, tallying 11 straight points to take control. Kirilenko donated two buckets during the game-deciding run, and Miles' tip opened a 103-88 game.

Utah rolled to victory from there.

Game Notes

The Jazz made 48.8 percent of their shots, compared to 46.7 percent for the Grizzlies...Memphis turned the basketball over 19 times...Kirilenko had three steals.

What Is the Point Spread?

What are Sports Betting Point Spreads?

In any football or basketball game (the main sports that use point spreads) there are two teams playing against each other.

Those teams, though, are rarely exactly evenly matched – meaning that typically one team has a better chance than the other to win the game. If bettors were allowed to bet on who was simply going to win the game, smart ones would obviously bet on the better team (likely winning more than 50% of the time in the process).

If winning were that easy the Las Vegas and online sportsbooks would stop taking any bets! This is where the point spread comes in: the basic function of the point spread is to balance the likelihood of each team “winning” by adjusting the final score by the point spread. After this adjustment is made you get the Against The Spread result (ATS result for short).

Let’s look at Super Bowl XXXIX, New England Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles. Most people believed the defending champ Patriots to be the better team – so if betting were simply based upon which team would win the game, an uneven majority of people would have wagered on New England. But, by using the point spread, the bookmakers adjusted the terms of the bet, evening the proposition so about half the people believed the Pats to be the smart bet, while the other half considered Philly to be the smart bet.

How to Read Point Spreads

New England Patriots -7 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The better team, called the Favorite, is expected to win the game and must “give” or “lay” points to the weaker team. The favorite is listed with a minus sign and the number of points they are favored by (e.g., New England -7)

In the case of our example, New England must not only win the game, but they must win by more than 7 points for Pats bettors to have a winning ATS result. An Eagles bettor wins his bet either if:
